week 10 Wednesday, May 4 2011

I learned alot of things while going to the St. Louis cemetary #2. I learned from other groups about erhe deceased and how they were a mjaor part of the city of New Orleans. I also learn from my groups things about the yellow fever that we had not discussed in class but overall it was a great experience getting to go visit the burial grounds for so many people. I feel that going to the cemetery I got to experience a new part of being apart of the culture in the New Orleans community. I felt that doing this service project we have opened the door for Xavier students and students aorund the community to go see what the cemetary is alking about and how we as a student body help better preserve the community of the non-living. I feel that with the proper care tkaers and epole who are very intested in could be a program that continues to be around for a long time.

The overall goal of the project was to inform people about the cemetery and let them know that their are some cools things to do with people even if they are dead becasue they once were somebody and mostlikely did something good inorder to help the community. I feel that if given the opprotunity I would go and continue to be a advocate of informing people about cmeteries and all  of the cool things that they have to offer.

In summary the cemetary has brought me to a better apprecaite for people after life and how they need to be treated with respect and that they were once people just like use so they know things we did and how we felt and with more people we could continue to legacy of perserving their name.

When I am buried I would like to be either cremated or have a tradition buriul service. I am not that picky about if I am buried in the ground or not but I am particulater on if my body is treated properly after I die. I believe that if someone is dead that their remains should be held with care regaurdless of what it is or who it is. I think it is a priorotiy that when a person who knows dies and their body has to be handle that it is treated with the most care and respect.

There are many people who were not taught how to properly take caare of bodies and exactly what to do when someone dies. I think lessons whould be taught on what to do when someone dies and how to handle things that are going on. I apprecaite Xavier and my myteachers for showing me ways to respect and show care for the dead. There are certain things in life that show what knid of person you are and if you can show that you know how to properly care for the deceased and that you know levels of the death process that some people are not familiar with that really imnpresses some people. I feel that Xavier and the facilty here have prepared me so that am aware of these things.

Some people do not hold the same values when it comes to reguarding life and I dont think it is they do want to they just were not taught most likeyl and it shows in thsoe particular a reas. I think when as person is dead the arrangement that they ask for be exact and shows the deceased persons vision not the vison of the one coordnating the  funeral.

week 10 Wednesday, May 4 2011

I did my volunteer work at a business store. I did  cleaning and shelved merchandise.  I helped by cleaning the store.  I have never cleaned anything other than my room.  By going to Decoratia it was a small step forward to be not afraid cleaning outside your house.  I use to think its a little embarrassing mopping floors while people are watching you passing by; but it feels good that I can do this even though I am not getting paid.  I helped them shelve merchandise and learned how organizing is important in business.  This gives me a better understanding how a business runs and will help me in future. I helped them do inventory.  I counted the products in the storage and helped them with figures.  I figured out how much merchandise was sold and what was needed to be ordered. My service also included greeting customers when they entered the store and assisting them.  Helping customers is type of a leadership skills which is very important.  I was a quite and a shy student in school.  I never did much of talking but when I had to assist customers; my self esteem grew.  I was more confident and started helping people out.  I was having traits of a good leader.  Being a good leader is important in college and in your career. In order to be a good leader, you have to be a trusted and be known to love life with honesty and integrity.  Volunteering in a business field gave me the opportunity to discover just how little I know.  There is a lot of hard work behind running a business.  There is a lot of filing to do.  I learned how to file things and why filing was so important.  Managing a business is a rough task and being organized is very important.

From what you’ve read for this week, speculate how Save Our Cemeteries might play a role in the promotion of a just and humane society? Monday, May 2 2011

Save our cemeteries help keep cemeteries clean.  Save our cemeteries encourage individuals, schools, or group people to take in part of volunteer work.  This very helpful in keeping cemeteries clean specially in New Orleans where there are many old cemeteries.  Some people are scared to  go to cemeteries because some have gotten old and a little rusty.  Even I get goosebumps when I go to cemetery.  Save Our Cemetery is helping to eliminate this problem.  When the cemeteries would be regularly cleaned then they will seem less spooky.  There would be more visitors to the cemeteries.  Save Our Cemetery is also promoting volunteering services.  People are getting chance to take part in community.  Students are motivated to help in the community.  This also can take away the fear of dying which some people have in themselves.  Once they join a program with Save Our Cemeteries then they will visit cemeteries more than they usually do.   The fear of dying among themselves can be eliminated.  Save Our Cemetery is an important organization because some people wouldn’t even take time out to go clean outside in the community and specially in the cemeteries where sometimes it can get scary.  They are considerate enough to help the people who have past away from this world by keeping they burial place clean.

Which cultural death ritual did you find the most unusual? Is there anything remarkable about our own death rituals? Sunday, May 1 2011

I find indian death rituals different and unique.  For most of the indians; cremations is the most ideal method for dealing with death.  After a cremation, ashes and fragments of bone are collected and eventually immersed in a holy river.  After a funeral, everyone undergoes a purifying bath.  After a cremation, ashes and fragments of bone are collected and eventually immersed in a holy river. After a funeral, everyone undergoes a purifying bath. Hindus believe the human body is a combination of five basic natural elements; namely agni which is fire, jala which is water, vayu which is air, prithvi which is earth and akasha which is space.  When one dies, fire ceases, and that living form is sent to its original state of creation.  In hindus traditions they prefer to destroy the corpse by fire and burying it into ground.  This is to decrease a feeling of detachment into the  spirit, which will be helpful to encourage it into passing to the other world.  I just find there ritual a little different.

Our rituals arent much different then others.  We pray for the dead one and then bury them into the ground inside a coffin.  Then we pray for there sins to be forgiven and may god bless them.  So basically we bury them and pray for them.

Why does the author argue that we fear death? Do you fear death? Sunday, May 1 2011

Everyone has to face death one day.  Some people find it hard to talk about or think about it.  Death may be just around the corner. Although we don’t like to think about it, each of us has a terminal condition.  The meter is running.  We don’t know how much more time we have left and thinking about can sometimes scare some people.  It is important that we come to terms with our own death.  Unless we do so, we will have a limited ability to assist and understand those who are dying and those grieving the death of a loved one.  Accepting your death will help to ease your fears and enable you to offer more peace and comfort to those struggling with death and loss.  We should appreciate for what we have and enjoy the moment we can live.

Who is the individual your group picked? Why did you pick this individual? Sunday, May 1 2011

For our service learning project, my group and I chose to research on Ernie and Antoinette K- Doe.  There is very little we knew about the K-Does while choosing them but now we are eager to learn about them.  This is project is something new for me and I can’t wait to get started on it.  We have done a little research and found out that he was born in New Orleans and he has a music background which we can learn a lot from.  I haven’t researched much about them yet but can’t wait to gather information about them.  I want to learn about their lifestyle and their achievements.  Whats makes them different among others?
